‘The Chaos and the Calm’ was spawned by a trip to the Leeuwin Lighthouse on a blustery day in May. I spent the day exploring the region with family. We arrived to the historical waterwheel site that inspired this painting in the late afternoon, as the weather came in.
The energy and the power of the wild and rugged coast was palpable. Waves exploded into the beach with a ferocity that made you feel infinitesimal. The wind was wild, and the sound deafening. Yet behind the windbreak offered by the rocky barrier ahead, a moment of complete calm and peace was to be found. Crabs went about their business, feeding on the mossy rocks, unperturbed by the chaos that raged beyond their pool. The water ebbed and rippled gently as it lapped the sand. Seaweed danced in the gentle flow.
The sun erupted through a small break in the cloud illuminating the distant headland in rays of light that resembled the hand of god. It was a moment of pure magic, where Mother Nature unveiled herself in her full and unbridled complexity- in both total chaos, and absolute calm.
